Never wanting to miss news of wars or rumours of wars, a little snippet that appeared on VE3D has proved interesting. According to the news piece the Xbox is due to drop to $149 (£93) in the US. Sony will also be pitching its PS2 at that price. Meanwhile, Nintendo will be dropping the Gamecube down to $99 (£62).

Microsoft had been floating around on the horizon off the California coastline watching Hollywood with interest. Now they have parked a whacking great big battleship just offshore. It has announced its own DVD format and has backing from some insiders in a move to make Media Player the new standard in DVD playback.

Who would believe a $1,000 (£625) remote control is a revolutionary product just because it runs Windows? Especially when many people spend a similar sum for an entire home theater system, with speakers, a television, a DVD player, and an included wireless remote? The ViewSonic Airpanel V110 Wireless Smart Display with remote-control software called Nevo, from Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI), may just be such a device and could become the third (maybe even second) computer in your home. This remote is a Web-surfing, e-mail–reading computer at heart. And a Smart Display may be cheaper, easier to use, and more flexible than a dedicated device.

We may someday call it the shot heard 'round the world'. Microsoft hasn't been too friendly toward those efforts. Last fall, it shut down a maker of "mod chips" -- circuitry that can be soldered onto the motherboard of the Xbox to make the machine run Linux. The letter politely demanded that Microsoft stop "restricting choice" -- and rid itself of the mod market to boot -- by publishing the code required to run unapproved programs without modifications to the Xbox.
