China will export an estimated five million DVD recorders this year, a huge increase over the 3,000 units exported last year, Chinese makers of DVD players/drives indicated.

Iomega has begun selling its 'son of Jaz' removable hard drive, Rev. Pitched as an alternative to tape back-up rigs, Rev provides 35GB of uncompressed storage capacity per 2.5in removable disk. The disk is mounted inside a 10 x 8 x 8cm cartridge, and yields a 25MBps transfer rate - eight times faster than DDS-4 tape, Iomega claims.

Nikkei Market Access is reporting that hard drive capacity matters the most to consumers when purchasing a new DVD recorder. According to the report Consumers' purchase process for digital home appliances: the second survey 28.3% of the respondents who "wished to buy a DVD recorder with a HDD within a year" answered that they placed the highest priority on "HDD capacity" in deciding which model to buy.

That's one of the projections by IBM technology researchers who see the entertainment industry changing the way it sells products in order to cut advertising costs, combat piracy and take advantage of new digital technologies.

BenQ have announced that it will offer the DW830A, its first 8x DVD+R DL (double layer) burner model, in mid-May and the DW1600, its first 16x DVD+RW model, in early June.
